PhD position in Finance

The Department of Accounting, Finance & Insurance at KU Leuven invites applications for a PhD position in Finance, focusing on empirical banking. The project will address emerging challenges for the banking sector, including competition from non-bank financial intermediaries and structural transformations required by the green transition. The successful candidate will join the Research Group Finance, which has a strong international reputation and is part of a wide network of universities, companies, and institutions. The doctoral program is individualized, allowing the student to devote four years to full-time research. The program leads to a doctoral degree in Business Economics and prepares graduates for academic careers at top universities or research positions in policy institutions. The position is funded as a full-time PhD scholarship recipient, with an initial contract of 12 months, extendable up to 4 years upon positive evaluation. Applicants must have completed a master's degree in (applied) economics, econometrics, finance, or business engineering by September 2026. Excellent academic qualifications at both bachelor and master level are required. Candidates should demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English, sufficient for effective communication with colleagues. GRE or GMAT test scores and/or evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL or IELTS are recommended. The application should include a curriculum vitae, research statement, transcript of all university grades, and proof of English proficiency. The contract can start as of October 1, 2026.
