About this position
The University of Zurich is offering a four-year, 80% PhD position in Large-Scale In-Situ Experiments on Glacier Ice Rheology and Thermodynamics within the Swiss National Science Foundation-funded LISERT project.
The doctoral researcher will join the Glaciology and Geomorphodynamics Group in the Department of Geography and investigate how temperate glacier ice deforms under active forcing at metre scales. The research combines large-scale in-situ glacier measurements, structural-geological analysis, numerical modeling, theoretical developments, drone-based multispectral and thermal sensing, and glacier flow models.
Responsibilities include designing and implementing field experiments, analyzing experimental datasets, adapting numerical models of ice flow and crystal texture evolution, participating in week-long glacier field camps, collaborating with PhD students and postdocs, and publishing high-quality research. The project involves collaboration with scientists at the University of Oxford and LMU Munich.
Applicants should have an MSc in glaciology, structural geology, applied geophysics, computational mechanics, or computational geosciences, together with knowledge of solid, fluid, or continuum mechanics, numerical modeling, and programming in Python, Matlab, Julia, C++, or a similar language. Glacier travel, backcountry skiing, and expedition-camping skills are desirable. Excellent English, scientific writing, teamwork, communication, and organizational abilities are required.
The PhD will be supervised by Dr. Martin Lüthi and Dr. Claudia Röösli. Applications should include a cover letter, CV, and transcripts and should be submitted through the online application portal. Employment begins upon agreement.
