About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, within the Architectural Engineering + Technology (AE&T) Department. The project is part of the NWO-funded Nature 4 Homes initiative and focuses on indoor thermal conditions, heat resilience, resident perception, building envelope, ventilation, and climate change adaptation.

You will use a citizen science approach to study how residents experience changing indoor temperatures in existing dwellings across different regions of the Netherlands. The research combines field measurements of indoor and outdoor environmental conditions with resident perceptions, behaviour, and building characteristics. A key part of the work is developing methods to characterize natural variation in indoor conditions and predicting these patterns using climate scenarios and data collected in dwellings, in co-creation with residents, housing corporations, and industry partners.

Supervision is by AnneMarie Eijkelenboom and Philomena M. Bluyssen at TU Delft, together with Gert-Jan Steeneveld from Wageningen University and Research. The project is interdisciplinary and collaborative, with close interaction with a postdoctoral researcher, three other PhD candidates, and research, industry, and public-sector partners.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in architecture, architectural engineering, meteorology or atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, or civil engineering; strong interest in human perception, building design, and climate change; ability to model and analyse indoor/outdoor environmental conditions; excellent English communication skills; willingness to work with residents in real-world dwellings in the Netherlands.

Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours), plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 11 November 2026. Apply online and upload your CV, motivation letter (max 600 words), BSc and MSc degrees/transcripts, and contact details for at least three references. Email applications are not accepted.
