About this position
EPFL is advertising a PhD position in Integrated Design and Optimization within the STI IGM LAMD group in Neuchatel, Switzerland. The project is part of TurboImpact, a Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network focused on the design, optimization, material selection, and manufacturing of small-scale turbomachinery for applications such as heat pumps, fuel cells, organic Rankine cycles, and gas turbines.
The research emphasis is on model order reduction, surrogate modeling, machine learning / AI, data-driven methods, multi-objective and multi-disciplinary optimization, constraint handling, and systems engineering. The position also connects to energy conversion systems, dynamic systems, turbomachinery, fluid dynamics, and manufacturing processes, making it a strong fit for candidates with a mechanical engineering or related engineering background.
The successful PhD student will work closely with industry partners, carry out experimental design and execution, analyze and interpret results, write journal articles, present at international conferences, and contribute to teaching and student supervision. The broader consortium includes 14 doctoral candidates working on complementary topics with supervision from European universities and research-intensive companies.
Funding is provided under MSCA Doctoral Network rules. The package includes a competitive salary, mobility and family allowances where applicable, full social security coverage, and paid leave. The appointment lasts 3 years and is expected to start on 1 February 2027 or by mutual agreement.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must not already hold a PhD, must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule, and must have a two-year master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong preparation in optimization, surrogate modeling, and turbomachinery-related engineering topics is especially relevant.
Application deadline: 30 November 2026 at 23:59. Apply online through the EPFL careers portal and submit one PDF containing the required documents: motivation letter, CV, grade transcripts, BSc/MSc diplomas with grading scale, BSc thesis, MSc thesis, and three referee names. Short-listed candidates will also need to apply separately to the relevant EPFL Doctoral Program for admission.
