About this position
PhD opportunity at EPFL in aerodynamic design of small-scale turbomachinery
This is a full-time PhD position at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne), based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, within the TurboImpact project funded by Horizon Europe – MSCA Doctoral Network. The project brings together 14 doctoral candidates working on complementary topics in small-scale turbomachinery for applications such as heat pumps, fuel cells, organic Rankine cycles, and gas turbines.
The selected doctoral researcher will work on topics at the intersection of mechanical engineering, aerodynamic design, topology optimization, heat transfer, structural mechanics, and robust design. Specific research goals include developing and applying multi-objective topology optimization, creating internal cooling concepts for hollow hub and blade structures, and integrating structural design with robust optimization under manufacturing uncertainty. The role includes close collaboration with industry partners, experimental work, scientific publishing, conference presentations, and participation in teaching and student supervision.
Funding: The position is funded as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network appointment with a competitive salary, mobility and family allowances where applicable, full social security coverage, and paid leave. Employment duration is 3 years, starting on 1 February 2027 or by mutual agreement.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants must satisfy the MSCA Mobility Rule, must be doctoral candidates (not already holding a PhD), and must hold a two-year master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field.
Application deadline: 30 November 2026 at 23:59.
How to apply: Submit an online application via the “Apply now” link and upload one PDF file containing a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma with grading scale, BSc thesis, MSc thesis, and names of three referees. Short-listed candidates will later need to apply to the relevant EPFL Doctoral Program to finalize PhD eligibility.
