About this position
PhD position in integrated power, gas and hydrogen systems at the Institute of Climate and Energy Research – Energy Systems Engineering (ICE-1), Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, in Jülich, Germany.
The research focuses on developing scenario-based modelling, simulation and analysis methods for coupled electricity and gas infrastructures in Europe. The project will investigate how electricity, natural gas and hydrogen systems interact under future energy-transition scenarios, supporting informed decisions for the design and operation of integrated energy systems.
The doctoral researcher will analyse future energy pathways and their effects on the planning and operation of European power and gas networks. The work will evaluate system behaviour across infrastructure, market and policy scenarios, while examining operational flexibility, cross-sector dependencies and potential bottlenecks in sector-coupled energy systems.
A central part of the project is the development and implementation of models for large-scale European energy infrastructures. The researcher will enhance and extend GasNetSim and related scientific software tools to support comprehensive integrated-system analyses and evolving research questions. The role also includes communicating results through publications, conferences and research collaborations, supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s students, and representing the institute in national and international research contexts.
The researcher will join an international and interdisciplinary team working on computational energy systems, with access to advanced scientific and technical infrastructure and ongoing academic supervision during the doctoral studies.

What's required
An excellent Master's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, energy systems, computational engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates should have a strong background in numerical methods, mathematical modelling, and network simulation or analysis; a good understanding of power systems, gas networks, or coupled multi-energy systems; and proficiency in programming, especially Python. Experience with C/C++ is advantageous. Interest in scientific software development, large-scale infrastructure modelling, and computational research, along with strong analytical, independent-working, teamwork, and communication skills, is expected. Very good written and spoken English at least at B2 level according to the CEFR is required, ideally supported by a certificate; German is not mandatory but appreciated.
