About this position

This fully-funded PhD position at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) offers an exciting opportunity to join the IVA3D project, focusing on the instant visualization and editing of arbitrarily large 3D data sets. Hosted at the Institute for Visual Computing & Human-Centered Technology, the successful candidate will work on developing interactive solutions for massive 3D datasets, including volumes, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), point clouds, and more. The project addresses the growing challenge of handling and visualizing extremely large datasets, such as country-scale scans and high-resolution brain scans, by creating novel visual computing and I/O methods that eliminate slow pre-processing and enable real-time exploration and editing.

Supervision is provided by Dr. Markus Schütz (on-site at TU Wien), renowned for his work in massive point cloud rendering and out-of-core visualization, and Assistant Professor Bernhard Kerbl (remote), an expert in 3D Gaussian Splatting, real-time graphics, and neural-radiance-field-based view synthesis. The research will focus on reconstructing and visualizing large 3D datasets without slow pre-computation, on-the-fly data loading, and level-of-detail (LOD) generation to support diverse end-user devices and applications. The project aims to create a near-instant feedback loop for users in fields such as medical research, geography, and surveying.

Candidates should have a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computational Science/Engineering, Computer Graphics, Visualisation, or a related field, with strong programming skills in C++ and GPU programming (CUDA, OpenCL, Vulkan). Experience with data structures, streaming, or out-of-core algorithms is highly valued. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work on-site in Vienna are required.

The position offers a 3-year doctoral fellowship with a competitive salary and benefits according to Austrian university regulations. TU Wien provides a vibrant international research environment, excellent research infrastructure, and the opportunity to conduct high-impact research at the intersection of visualization, big data, and real-time interaction. Vienna is consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities, offering a rich cultural atmosphere and affordable living.

To apply, complete the online application form and upload a motivational letter, CV (with photo and publications or project experience), a digital copy of your Master’s thesis, and any relevant certificates. Optionally, include a short research statement outlining your research interests and career goals. The application deadline is January 31, 2026, with a preferred start in Spring 2026 (negotiable).
