About this position
PhD opportunity in Materials Chemistry at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), in Sønderborg, Denmark.
The project focuses on solid state chemistry, crystal structure analysis, synthesis and characterization of mixed-anion compounds (including transition metal (oxy)nitrides), and evaluation of their performance in solar water splitting. The position is embedded in SDU NanoSYD and is linked to a project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.
The successful candidate will conduct collaborative and independent research, perform materials synthesis and characterization (e.g., XRD, XPS, SEM), analyze crystal structures, present results, and publish in international journals. There are also opportunities to supervise BSc, MSc, and exchange/visiting students, assist with teaching, help with grant proposals, and support laboratory organization.
Applicants should have an MSc in Materials Science, Materials Chemistry, Solid State Chemistry, Solid State Physics, or a related field. Strong hands-on experience in solid-state synthesis, technical characterization skills, fluency in English, teamwork and independent working ability, and strong communication skills are required. Experience with synchrotron/neutron facilities, publication writing, scientific illustration, and participation in research projects are valued.
This is a 3-year salaried PhD position with a monthly gross salary of 37,075 DKK including pension, with possible higher placement depending on postgraduate experience. The application deadline is 2026-10-31 at 23:59 CET/CEST.
