About this position
Lund University is offering a doctoral position in medical radiation physics within its Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) research group in Lund, Sweden. The project focuses on diffusion MRI (dMRI), quantitative MRI and the development of methods for accurate assessment of tissue microstructure in the living human brain.
The research will investigate how controlled diffusion encoding can reveal properties such as cell density, cell shape, cell size, blood volume and cell membrane permeability. These measurements will be evaluated as potential imaging biomarkers for improved diagnosis and monitoring of neurological disease. The doctoral researcher will contribute to MRI image reconstruction, image analysis, mathematical modelling, numerical optimisation, image processing, image registration, image correction and deep learning. Programming of the MRI scanner, experimental work and analysis of patient data may also be included.
Applicants must meet Lund University's general and specific doctoral admission requirements, including a relevant second-cycle qualification or equivalent academic background and a master's-level independent project. Particularly relevant preparation includes medical physics, mathematics, mathematical statistics, physics, signal processing, computational methods, medical imaging, MRI or diffusion MRI. Programming experience in Python, MATLAB or equivalent is expected, while knowledge of deep learning and computational MRI research is advantageous. Strong English communication skills and qualities such as independence, analytical ability, creativity, problem-solving and teamwork will be considered.
The position is a full-time doctoral studentship with a monthly salary and is expected to start on 1 January 2027, or as soon as possible by agreement. Doctoral studies normally run for four years. Up to 20% of working time may involve teaching or other departmental duties, with a corresponding extension of employment.
Applications must include a CV, personal letter, academic certificates or diplomas, a copy of the master's thesis and any other relevant supporting documents. Apply through the Varbi recruitment portal by 1 December 2026.
