About this position
Radboud University in the Netherlands is offering a PhD position in movement ecology within the Department of Ecology and the Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences. The project investigates how climate-driven changes in freshwater availability affect the year-round movements of greater white-fronted geese.
The research will combine long-term GPS tracking data from more than 200 geese, remotely sensed environmental datasets and statistical modelling. Key topics include snow cover, freshwater availability, waterbody use during breeding and migration, winter roost availability, temperature change, movement decisions, breeding success and animal responses to climate change. Dr Andrea Kölzsch will be the main supervisor.
Candidates should have a recent MSc in biology, ecology, environmental sciences, applied data science or a related discipline. Experience with ecological data collection, large ecological datasets, statistics, R programming and scientific writing is expected, as well as C1-level English and collaborative skills.
The position is a paid temporary employment contract at 0.8 FTE for five years or 1.0 FTE for four years, with a starting salary of €3,204 gross per month increasing to €4,051 from the fourth year, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus and additional employment benefits. Apply by 13 December 2026 with a CV, cover letter, two academic referees and a brief description of two research aspects you would pursue.
