About this position
This postdoctoral position at La Rochelle Université focuses on quantitative ecology within a project developing a digital twin approach for marine ecology and conservation. The work builds on an existing simulation framework for individual movement trajectories and aims to move from individual-scale predictions to population-scale dynamics.
The researcher will develop quantitative and statistical methods to aggregate simulated individual trajectories into population-level patterns of movement and habitat use. A key part of the project is understanding how individual variability, behavioural strategies, and environmental responses combine to generate emergent spatial and temporal patterns at the population scale.
The postdoc will also design and evaluate what-if scenarios involving future environmental and human pressures. These may include oceanographic changes associated with climate change, as well as anthropogenic pressures such as maritime traffic and fishing. The objective is to quantify how these changes could alter spatial distribution, habitat use, and exposure to pressures, and to identify conditions under which substantial shifts in population-level patterns may occur.
Another major component is the development of a spatial decision-support system. The results from population-level forecasts and scenario simulations will be translated into spatially explicit indicators of habitat use, exposure, and potential risk. Depending on project progress, the outputs may be integrated into the UCLR (Urban Coastal Lab La Rochelle) platform to support visualisation and exploration of alternative scenarios.
The project is closely linked to validation against biologging data and information on the distribution of the grey seal. The researcher may also contribute to indicators that help prioritise areas for management and conservation, and part of the work may be carried out with a master's student to support scenario-based habitat visualisation.
