The University of Cologne, one of Europe's largest and oldest universities, is offering a PhD position in Nuclear Physics at its Institute for Nuclear Physics within the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about experimental nuclear physics and the structure of atomic nuclei. The research will involve hands-on participation in planning, preparing, and executing nuclear physics experiments, including work at the local tandem accelerator facility and at national and international research infrastructures. The successful candidate will contribute to the testing, characterization, and development of novel detection systems, analyze and interpret experimental data, and collaborate with international research teams on joint projects. Presentation of research results at scientific meetings and in publications is expected.
Applicants should possess a completed scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in physics and demonstrate a strong interest in experimental nuclear physics and nuclear structure research. Experience with detector technologies or experimental methods is advantageous. The position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team in an international research environment, with good communication skills and proficiency in English. German language skills are beneficial but not mandatory.
