About this position
PhD Position in Optical Coatings (MSCA-DN TRADES) at Institut Fresnel in Marseille, France.
This doctoral project focuses on broadband optical monitoring techniques for the precise control of optical interference filters and multilayer optical coatings. The work addresses a key challenge in the fabrication of modern filters: controlling the thickness of each deposited layer when structures are no longer periodic and can involve hundreds of layers with thicknesses spanning from a few nanometers to a few hundred nanometers. The thesis will explore how broadband in-situ monitoring can improve precision compared with monochromatic monitoring, especially in deciding the best stopping condition during deposition.
The project is carried out in collaboration between the Thin Film Research Team at Institut Fresnel and Bühler/Leybold Optics in Germany, within the MSCA-DN TRADES network under Horizon Europe. The candidate will spend most of the time in Marseille, with short stays at Bühler and at other TRADES partner sites. This makes the position especially relevant for students interested in both fundamental optics and industrial thin-film coating applications.
Eligibility and profile: applicants should hold a Master in Science or equivalent. Strong knowledge of optics and programming is expected, and experience or background in optical thin films is considered an advantage. The requirements also state excellent English. The posting does not mention prior research experience as a requirement.
Funding: the position is funded through Horizon Europe - MSCA. The post is a full-time temporary PhD position.
Application: the deadline is 30 November 2026, 12:00 (Europe/Paris). Applications should be sent by email to [email protected].
This is a strong opportunity for a candidate interested in optics, thin-film deposition, optical metrology, and industrially relevant photonic coating technologies.
