About this position
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded doctoral student position in perovskite materials for hydrogen production by redox reactions.
The project, Enabling Negative Emissions with Hydrogen Production by Advanced Chemical Looping (ENHANCE), is part of a pan-European consortium funded through the Clean Energy Transition Partnership. The research aims to develop novel perovskite oxides with thermochemical properties suitable for hydrogen production from biogenic resources with inherent CO2 capture.
The PhD researcher will use advanced materials characterization and evaluation techniques, data mining, and generative machine-learning models to establish an active-learning framework for identifying promising materials. Candidates will be synthesized, characterized, and tested in the laboratory, with successful materials later implemented by project partners in small- and medium-scale pilot units. The work involves collaboration with the Divisions of Energy Technology, Chemical Physics, and Energy and Materials.
Applicants must hold an MSc degree of at least 240 ECTS credits in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, engineering physics, materials science, energy engineering, or a closely related discipline. Excellent spoken and written English is required. Experience with machine learning and coding for materials applications is advantageous, as are chemistry laboratory skills, materials synthesis and characterization, or ab-initio and DFT calculations of solid materials.
The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 35,725 SEK per month from May 1, 2026. The appointment is for four years and may extend to five years due to teaching and departmental duties of up to 20% of working time. The position requires physical presence in Gothenburg throughout the doctoral studies.
Submit an English-language CV, personal letter, and bachelor's and, if available, master's thesis with transcripts as PDF files through the online application portal. The deadline is December 4, 2026. Questions may be addressed to Professor Magnus Rydén at [email protected].
