About this position
Ghent University, a leading institution in Belgium, is offering a PhD position in Pharmacoepidemiology focused on tailored prevention and treatment of lung diseases in the general population. The position is based in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department FW03 - Bio-analysis, and is a full-time temporary appointment. The research project centers on asthma and other respiratory diseases, with a particular emphasis on risk factors such as overweight, smoking, and air pollution, which significantly contribute to poor health outcomes in Belgium.
As a doctoral researcher, you will dedicate at least 70% of your time to academic research in preparation for your dissertation. Your work will involve collecting and analyzing data on risk factors, medication use, and lung function from adults in the general population. The primary goal is to identify risk factors and develop prevention strategies that improve lung health at the community level. You will also participate in teaching activities, specifically supporting Dutch courses such as Pathophysiology I-IV and Design of Clinical Studies, and contribute to both internal and external departmental services.
Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree (Medicine, Hospital Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Care, Drug Development, or equivalent) by the start of the appointment. For degrees awarded outside the EU, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Candidates with publications or a master's thesis related to risk factors for lung diseases or prevention of chronic complex diseases are preferred. Teaching experience, participation in extra training, and conference attendance are advantageous. Strong communication and teaching skills, proficiency in statistical data processing (R and/or SPSS), and the ability to translate clinical problems into statistical syntax are essential. Familiarity with current healthcare trends in Belgium and internationally, and the ability to apply scientific research to professional practice and training, are important. The ideal candidate will be independent, organized, problem-solving, and able to thrive in a multidisciplinary and international academic environment.
The position offers a two-year contract, renewable twice for two years (up to six years total, subject to positive evaluation and prior appointments within the Flemish Community). Remuneration is according to salary scale AAP3, and staff benefits include training opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The appointment will start on or after 15 September 2026.
To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 28 July 2026. Required documents include your CV and study results (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), transcript of the required degree, and translation if necessary. For diplomas outside the EU, provide a certificate of equivalence or proof of application. Late or non-online applications will not be accepted. For further information about the vacancy, contact Prof. Lies Lahousse at [email protected].
Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
