About this position

PhD position in Photophysics of 2D Quantum Materials at Uppsala University, Sweden.

The Division of Solid State Physics, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, is recruiting a doctoral student for a project on the photophysics of 2D quantum materials, especially transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The research aims to deepen understanding of defect physics, exciton dynamics, and defect passivation in exfoliated 2D materials using advanced vibration spectroscopies, time-resolved optical spectroscopy, microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), transient absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray-based spectroscopies.

The position is based at the Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala University, and includes full-time doctoral employment for four years. The doctoral student will conduct experiments, analyze data, write scientific manuscripts, present results at meetings and conferences, and participate in collaborative discussions within the research group. Teaching and other departmental duties may be included up to 20%.

Eligibility requires a second-cycle degree or equivalent, with a master’s degree in physics, chemistry, or a related field. Applicants should have completed relevant courses in Solid State Physics or Physical Chemistry and have strong English communication skills. Helpful additional experience includes 2D material characterization, transient absorption spectroscopy, and programming in MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for data analysis.

The application must be written in English and include a short cover letter, CV, certified degree and transcripts, thesis and other supporting documents, and contact details for at least two referees. Applications are reviewed continuously, and interviews may be called during the process. The deadline is 20 October 2026.
