About this position

PhD opportunity in quantum nanophysics at the University of Vienna, Austria. The Quantum Nanophysics team around Prof. Markus Arndt is recruiting a University assistant predoctoral / PhD candidate for a 4-year research position in experimental physics.

The project is linked to V-QUTE and focuses on pushing the limits of matter-wave interferometry with nanoparticles, including very cold particle sources, quantum coherent beam splitters, advanced detectors, ultraviolet laser systems, quantum sensing, mass spectrometry, and biomolecular chemistry. The group works at the interface of quantum and classical physics and quantum/bio-molecular science, with strong expertise in molecular beams, ultra-high-vacuum systems, nanoparticle cooling, cluster science, optics, and laser technology.

Applicants should have a completed Master’s degree or Diploma in physics (or equivalent qualification enabling PhD enrollment at the University of Vienna). The post asks for strong experimental skills, hands-on experience in at least two relevant technical areas, and excellent English. A structured four-year Bachelor’s degree may also be considered if it qualifies for PhD admission.

This is a paid position with a gross salary of EUR 3,776.10 per month on a full-time basis (14x per year), with possible salary progression based on prior experience. The contract runs for 4 years, initially limited to 1.5 years and then automatically extended if not terminated early.
