About this position
PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in scalable lipid nanoparticle purification technologies, with a strong focus on chemical engineering, process engineering, computational fluid dynamics, filtration, and nanomedicine.
This PhD is part of the SPARC program (Scalable Personalized Nanotherapeutics for Cancer Treatment), which aims to improve cancer therapy through personalized nanomedicines, tumor-on-a-chip platforms, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The project is shared between the Precision Therapeutics group (Dr. Alina Rwei) and the Complex Fluid Processing group (Prof. Johan Padding) at TU Delft, with collaboration across an academic-industrial network including Merck KGaA and Johnson & Johnson.
The research topic is the purification of lipid-based drug delivery nanoparticles after manufacturing. You will investigate dilution, ultra-/diafiltration, membrane fouling, and tangential flow filtration, and design improved purification systems that reduce nanoparticle loss and increase throughput. The work combines CFD simulations, modeling of fouling build-up, novel flow geometry design, membrane material exploration, and experimental verification of alternative membranes and modular purification components.
Eligibility highlights: MSc or equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nanotechnology, or a related field; strong analytical mindset; ability to work across computational and experimental domains; excellent English communication skills; experience with CFD or pharmaceutical downstream processing is a plus.
Funding and employment: This is a paid PhD employment position at TU Delft for 4 years in principle. Salary ranges from €3059 to €3881 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours/week), plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts, a monthly work costs contribution, flexible work schedules, and relocation support for moving to the Netherlands.
Application deadline: 6 October 2026. Apply online with a CV, Bachelor’s and Master’s transcripts, and a motivation cover letter.
