About this position
The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at the University of Tübingen is offering a PhD position focused on Teaching Quality and AI-generated Classroom Videos. This interdisciplinary research opportunity is ideal for candidates with backgrounds in Psychology, Empirical Educational Research, Cognitive Science, or related fields who are passionate about advancing empirical research on teaching quality and classroom dynamics using innovative AI tools.
The research team investigates how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to systematically analyze teaching quality dimensions and teacher personality. The PhD project will involve systematic variations in teacher personality, validation of teaching quality dimensions through experimental designs, assessment of these dimensions using AI, and training for raters and teachers. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Tim Fütterer, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, and other team members, as well as researchers from the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network, to design and conduct studies.
Applicants should have an excellent academic degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, proficiency in English, and experience with statistical analysis software such as R, SPSS, or Mplus. Openness to empirical research methods, curiosity about statistical approaches, and willingness to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. Additional desirable qualifications include interest in AI, open-weight models, experience with ComfyUI or similar frameworks, basic video production skills, and conceptual familiarity with Python.
The position offers a productive and collaborative research environment, comprehensive supervision, and a wide range of training opportunities, including methodological training and support for international collaborations. The PhD candidate will be integrated into the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network and will benefit from guidance in scientific publishing and opportunities to share research with a broader audience.
Funding is provided through an E13 TV-L, 75% position for three years, including salary and benefits as per German public sector regulations. The University of Tübingen is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and applicants with disabilities will be given preferential consideration if equally qualified. The university encourages qualified female researchers to apply.
