About this position
PhD Position: Sensing Viscosity with Ultrasound
Delft University of Technology is offering a PhD position in the Dynamics of Micro and Nanosystems section within the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The project will develop innovative, modular and scalable flowmeters that measure flow rate and viscosity in real time using ultrasonic surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensing.
The research will combine theoretical modelling and experimental work to investigate how ultrasonic waves interact with flowing fluids. The PhD researcher will develop quantitative viscosity-measurement strategies, model and validate sensing principles, build an experimental ultrasound platform, characterize propagation losses, quality factors, wave speeds and resonance behaviour, and identify excitation frequencies that improve accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio. Results will support applications in food, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, environmental-monitoring and medical-infusion processes.
The researcher will collaborate with the University of Twente and industry partners, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, write a PhD thesis and contribute to education, including supervision of MSc students. Applicants should hold a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a related field. Experience in modelling, experimental research and design is required; fluid dynamics or acoustics experience is preferred. Strong English communication, independence, creativity and collaborative skills are expected.
The position is a four-year full-time employment in principle, with a gross monthly salary of €3,204–€4,051 increasing by year, plus an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Apply online by 29 November 2026 with a one-page cover letter, CV and publication copies if available. Contact Dr. Gerard Verbiest for vacancy information at [email protected].
