About this position
PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, within the Dynamics of Micro and Nanosystems (DMN) section of the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME).
The project focuses on developing innovative ultrasound-based sensing technology to measure the viscosity of flowing fluids in real time. The goal is to create modular and scalable flowmeters that can measure both flow rate and viscosity using surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensing. This research addresses a key challenge: while SAW sensing is known, the mechanisms behind quantitative viscosity measurement are not yet fully understood or commercially applied. Your work will help establish the scientific principles needed for accurate measurement strategies and new sensor designs.
You will combine theoretical modelling and experimental research to study how ultrasonic waves interact with flowing fluids. The research includes building and validating a model of the sensing principles, designing an experimental platform for ultrasound-based sensing, characterising propagation losses, quality factors, wave travel speeds and resonance behaviour, and identifying optimal excitation frequencies to improve measurement accuracy and signal-to-noise ratio. The project is highly relevant to industrial and medical processes that depend on continuous fluid-property monitoring, including food production, medicines, semiconductor manufacturing, environmental monitoring and medical infusion systems for neonatal care.
The PhD is carried out at TU Delft in close collaboration with the University of Twente and leading industry partners in flow sensing. The work environment is described as open, friendly and collaborative, with access to research facilities and opportunities for professional development and training. The group has a strong culture of teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Eligibility highlights: candidates should have a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science or a related field, with experience in modelling, experimental research and design. A background in fluid dynamics and/or acoustics is preferred. Strong communication skills in English are required.
Funding and employment: this is a fully employed PhD position for 4 years in principle, arranged as two contracts (an initial 1.5-year contract with a go/no-go assessment, followed by a 2.5-year contract if progress is satisfactory). Salary ranges from €3204 to €4051 gross per month depending on year, plus 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
Application window: apply online no later than 29 November 2026. Submit a motivation letter, CV, and any relevant publications. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed. The contact person for questions is Dr. G.J. Verbiest ([email protected]).
