About this position
Applications are invited for a PhD position (m/f/d) in the group of Jun.-Prof. Frederik Haase at the Institute of Chemistry, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, in Halle (Saale), Germany.
The project addresses an important challenge in reticular chemistry: how covalent materials, especially covalent organic frameworks (COFs), can be assembled and disassembled in water in a controlled way. The research is motivated by the potential of water-based assembly to open new biological and medical applications, and it focuses on linker design as a route to generating COFs with desired properties on demand.
As a PhD researcher, you will work on water-based COFs and related covalent materials through a combination of multistep organic synthesis and advanced materials characterization. The planned methods include PXRD, solid-state NMR, FTIR, and TEM, together with solvothermal synthesis and organic materials synthesis. You will also contribute to scientific manuscripts, support research grant proposals, and take part in teaching duties.
The ideal candidate has a completed or soon-to-be completed Master of Science in Chemistry, or an equivalent degree, together with demonstrable experience in multistep organic synthesis or synthetic polymer chemistry and experience characterizing organic materials or polymers. Strong written and spoken English is required. Successful applicants with a non-German degree will need a Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education.
The position offers a 50% PhD appointment under TV-L E13 for 3 years, starting as soon as possible. Gross monthly salary is approximately €2,380–2,680 depending on experience, plus annual special payment and social benefits according to German public service regulations.
To apply, send a single PDF including a cover letter and CV to Frederik Haase at [email protected], quoting reference number Reg.-Nr. 5-4229/26-H. The application deadline is 2026-11-04.
The Haase Lab offers a young and supportive research environment with excellent facilities and an English-working environment at MLU in Halle (Saale), Germany.
