About this position

KU Leuven is offering a PhD position on energy systems modeling within the division of Applied Mechanics and Energy Conversion (TME) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, embedded in EnergyVille and the Energy Systems Integration and Modeling (ESIM) research group led by Prof. Erik Delarue.

The project sits at the intersection of energy systems, energy markets, and the energy transition. The group works on advanced modeling topics such as unit commitment, system planning, equilibrium modeling, agent-based modeling, renewables integration, energy policy, and market design. The position is designed for a highly motivated researcher interested in applying modeling tools to current challenges in decarbonization and the European Green Deal.

Two PhD topics are described in the advertisement. The first concerns pricing of heat in district heating networks, including the impact of heat market design, interactions in multi-vector energy systems, revenue streams such as waste heat valorisation and flexibility services, and financing mechanisms for district heating solutions. This topic is linked to a larger international project under the EU LIFE programme. The second concerns Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with a focus on their flexible operation in industrial energy systems, optimization of their participation in electricity markets, and assessment of system-wide effects of co-producing electricity and process steam.

The successful candidate should have a Master of Science in Engineering or a related discipline from a reputable institution. Applicants with backgrounds in economics or operations research are also encouraged. Strong academic performance is expected, together with a keen interest in energy system operation and planning, energy markets, policy, and modeling. Skills in Matlab, Python, GAMS, or Julia are considered an advantage, and good English communication skills are required.

The offer includes a four-year doctoral scholarship with a net monthly salary of about €2,500 and a PhD degree in Engineering upon successful completion. KU Leuven highlights collaboration with international partners, doctoral training, conference participation, and access to university infrastructure and sports facilities. The expected start is as soon as possible, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early interest is encouraged.

To apply, candidates should email Prof. Erik Delarue at [email protected] with the requested information in bullet points: name; master degree details; master thesis details; and a brief motivation statement. An academic CV should also be attached. Applicants are instructed not to apply through the online system at this stage; selected candidates will be invited to do so later.
