About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a PhD position focused on developing separation strategies for bioaromatic components derived from lignin depolymerisation. The research will be conducted within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department EA11 - Materialen, Textiel en Chemische Proceskunde. The project aims to design and optimise processes that produce multiple product streams of bioaromatics, meeting end-user specifications, by investigating the thermodynamic behaviour of complex mixtures and validating findings through both modelling and experimental work.
Lignin, a renewable macromolecule, offers significant potential for sustainable production of aromatic compounds. However, current conversion strategies yield complex mixtures that require advanced separation technologies. The PhD project will address these challenges by identifying key components in reactor effluents, modelling their thermodynamic properties, and developing purification processes. The research will contribute to the valorisation of lignin as a feedstock for bio-based and circular chemistry.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include a strong interest in thermodynamics and separation processes, experience or interest in experimental research (phase equilibrium measurements, physicochemical characterisation, analytical techniques such as GC, HPLC, NMR), and familiarity with process simulation software (ASPEN Plus, Gaussian, COSMO-RS). Knowledge of thermodynamic models (PC-SAFT, UNIFAC) is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate excellent English communication skills and a critical, analytical mindset.
The position offers a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years, remuneration according to salary scale WM1, and a comprehensive benefits package including training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. Ghent University promotes equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply.
To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before 14 June 2026. Required documents include your CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter, diploma transcript (with translation if necessary), reference letter, and overview of study results. Applications sent by email will not be considered. For further information, contact Prof. Jeroen Lauwaert at [email protected]. For questions about the application process, email [email protected].
