About this position

ETH Zürich invites applications for PhD positions in High-voltage circuit breaker technology, focusing on experimental research into environmentally friendly alternatives to SF6 gas in high-voltage switchgear. ETH Zürich is a world-leading university for science and technology, offering a dynamic and inspiring research environment in the heart of Europe. The electric energy sector is undergoing a transformation to support climate goals, and this research aims to develop and optimize equipment using novel gas mixtures with lower global warming potential.

The successful candidate will investigate the arcing behavior and current-interruption capabilities of non-SF6 gas mixtures, contributing to the fundamental understanding of electrical insulation and current interruption. The research is highly experimental, involving the planning, design, construction, and automation of novel setups and voltage/current sources. Data analysis is performed using state-of-the-art theoretical models, and results are published open access. The high-voltage laboratory collaborates closely with leading manufacturers in power transmission and distribution, and the team is composed of researchers with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Applicants should hold a degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field from a top-tier university, with an excellent academic record. Motivation, independence, organizational skills, and the ability to present results are essential. Prior experience in high-voltage engineering is beneficial but not required; hands-on experience in scientific experiments or competitive student teams is mandatory.

ETH Zürich values diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive culture, promoting equality of opportunity and a climate-neutral future. Application materials include a letter of motivation (highlighting relevant experience), CV, transcripts (in English, French, or German), and two references. Letters of recommendation are optional at this stage. Applications must be submitted online via the ETH Zürich application portal; email or postal applications will not be considered. For further information, visit the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering and the High Voltage Laboratory websites. Direct questions about the position to Prof. Christian Franck at [email protected] (no applications).

Join ETH Zürich to advance research in high-voltage engineering and contribute to sustainable energy solutions.
