About this position
PhD positions in Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence at Aalborg University
The Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University is inviting applications for two fully funded PhD positions in Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence, working with Professor Niels van Berkel in the Human Augmentation and Collaboration research group. The project is titled Safeguarding Users’ Cognitive Autonomy in Human-AI Interaction and focuses on how AI systems can support, rather than undermine, independent thinking.
The research combines Human-Computer Interaction, cognitive science, psychology, and computer science. One PhD position explores how everyday digital interaction signals such as typing and mouse movement can reveal cognitive load and mental demand over time. The other focuses on designing and evaluating cognitive support interventions through co-design with stakeholders and controlled studies. Both positions include a research stay abroad and offer room to shape the project according to the candidate’s interests.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree. The call highlights two profiles: a technically strong candidate interested in human behaviour and cognition, or a user-centred researcher with mixed-methods evaluation experience. The application must include a letter of motivation, a project description, CV, publication list if any, reference contacts, and bachelor’s/master’s diplomas. Applications that are clearly AI-generated or outside the project scope will be rejected.
The positions are three years in duration and are fully funded through a DFF research project. Employment terms follow Aalborg University and Danish collective agreement rules. The deadline is 13 November 2026, and the earliest start date is 1 January 2027.
Apply via Aalborg University’s recruitment system using the job advertisement page.
