About this position

PhD opportunity: Optimal Perturbations in Turbulent Flows at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

This competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project investigates which disturbances produce the largest response in turbulent flows. The research combines fluid mechanics, dynamical systems and chaos theory to understand how turbulence amplifies disturbances and generates organised patterns of motion.

The successful researcher will develop a chaotic resolvent framework for analysing forcing and response along chaotic flow trajectories. Work will include mathematical analysis, algorithm development, numerical implementation, turbulent-flow simulations, numerical linear algebra and scientific computing. The project will examine optimal forcing and response structures and assess how instantaneous turbulent dynamics affect predictions based on mean-flow analysis, with particular relevance to coherent structures in wall-bounded flows.

Applicants should hold a 2:1 honours degree. The advertised closing date is 30 June 2027. Funding is described as competition funded; applicants should consult the university's fees and funding information for detailed financial terms.

Apply through the University of Southampton postgraduate research project page and review the complete entry requirements before submitting an application.
