About this position
PhD project at the University of Nottingham on Microgrid Resilience, supervised by Rasa Remenyte-Prescott and Marco Rivera in the Faculty of Engineering.
This project aims to develop a modelling approach for assessing the resilience of a small-scale converter-dominated microgrid. The research is focused on integrating renewable generation, hybrid electrical storage, and hydrogen technologies to support reliable electricity supply when the upstream grid fails. The proposed system includes photovoltaic generation, batteries, supercapacitors, a hydrogen electrolyser, and a fuel cell, enabling hydrogen production, storage, and reconversion as part of microgrid operation.
The project will develop microgrid resilience metrics and a modelling and analysis framework to study how the system responds to a variety of disturbances, including low/high-frequency and high/low-impact events. The work will examine the microgrid’s ability to resist incidents, recover quickly, and restore operation under uncertainty, with clear relevance to future low-carbon power systems and net-zero energy strategies.
The position is open to UK, EU, and overseas applicants. Funding is not specified in the advert; applicants are directed to the University of Nottingham postgraduate funding pages for possible sources of support.
Entry requirements include a first-class degree in engineering, mathematics, or a relevant discipline, preferably at master’s level; in exceptional circumstances, a 2:1 degree may be considered. The application deadline is listed as 21 January, and early application is strongly encouraged. Applications should be submitted online via the University of Nottingham portal, and project enquiries can be directed to Rasa Remenyte-Prescott at [email protected].
