About this position

PhD Graduate Research Assistantship in Integrated Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Kentucky.

This opportunity is for a highly motivated PhD student to work in the Department of Soil Science and the Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology under the direction of Prof. Jason Unrine. The research is centered on the biogeochemistry and plant physiology of rare earth elements (REEs), with a specialization in Environmental Sciences and Ecosystem Ecology.

The project asks how plants take up and process rare earth elements in terrestrial ecosystems, addressing a topic with implications for environmental sustainability and resource management. The lab’s broader expertise includes environmental chemistry, toxicology, trace elements, analytical methods, microscopy, and molecular biology, and the position is supported by advanced instrumentation and research facilities.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a strong background in physiology, soil chemistry, mineralogy, and/or biogeochemistry. Experience in analytical chemistry, microscopy, and/or molecular biology is highly desirable. A bachelor’s degree in soil science, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental science, or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.

Funding: the assistantship includes a stipend, tuition remission, and health insurance. The position starts in the Fall 2026 semester.

How to apply: interested candidates should complete the form linked in the post. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is encouraged.
