About this position
PhD and MS opportunities are available in the Ecohydrology Lab at Kansas State University for students interested in grassland ecohydrology, hydrology, ecology, plant ecophysiology, soil science, and related environmental research.
The lab studies interactions between ecological and hydrological processes in grasslands, savannas, and shrublands, with a focus on how vegetation influences water movement and critical zone function under changing climate and land-use conditions. Research can be tailored to student interests and may center on: subsurface impacts of land-use/land-cover change, plant water-use strategies and coexistence in water-limited ecosystems, or drivers and consequences of preferential flow.
Students will work in a collaborative lab environment and may benefit from proximity to the Konza Prairie Biological Station in the Flint Hills ecoregion of the Great Plains. The position is based in Manhattan, Kansas, United States.
Funding includes an annual stipend of $30,771, paid bi-weekly, plus tuition and university fee coverage. Students also qualify for a university-subsidized health insurance plan.
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree or higher in ecology, biology, earth sciences, hydrology, or a related field by the time of hire. Strong communication skills and willingness to work outdoors in hot weather are required. Prior research or field experience and coding in R are preferred but not required.
To apply, send a 1-page personal statement, CV, informal transcripts, and contact information for three references to Rachel Keen at [email protected]. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Separate deadlines are listed for Spring 2027 start (no later than September 15, 2026) and Fall 2027 start (no later than December 1, 2026).
