About this position
Nord University in Bodø, Norway, invites applications for 1–2 full-time PhD Research Fellow positions in Social Science specialising in Indigenous History. The doctoral project, “Indigenous Minorities and Historical Revitalisation of Identity in Small Nation States,” will examine how Indigenous and minority communities have experienced nation-building, assimilation policies, identity formation, rights claims, and political and cultural revitalisation from the nineteenth century to the present.
The research will be affiliated with the Historical Studies@Nord (NORDHIST) research group and the Arctic Vulnerabilities specialisation within Nord University’s PhD in Social Science. Priority will be given to proposals addressing Lule, Pite, Ume, Inari, or South Sámi history. Other suitable themes include Indigenous uses of history and memory culture, Norwegianisation and assimilation, language and cultural revitalisation, Sámi organisations and institutions, political mobilisation, transregional networks in Sápmi, gender and class, and postcolonial perspectives. Quantitative and qualitative methods are welcome.
Applicants need a relevant bachelor’s and completed 120-ECTS master’s degree, normally with a B average, plus appropriate theoretical and methodological preparation. Strong English and oral and written Scandinavian-language skills are required. Candidates must be eligible for admission to the PhD programme and must not already hold a PhD.
The appointment starts on 1 September 2027 or another agreed date and is normally three years, with a possible four-year contract including 25% career-promoting duties. The annual salary is NOK 565,000, with pension, insurance, loan benefits, flexible working hours, and other university benefits. Applications must include a 5–7-page project proposal, cover letter, CV, academic records, thesis, references, and required recognition documents, and must be submitted electronically by 4 January 2027.
