About this position
Philipps-Universität Marburg is seeking a Doctoral Researcher/PhD Research Assistant in the Department of Pharmacy, in the research group on Mitochondrial Gene Expression led by Dr. Benedict Tan.
The three-year, 65%-part-time position investigates the biological function of 7S RNA, a non-coding mitochondrial DNA-encoded transcript, within the CRC/Transregio 440 project smART – specific mRNA targeting. The research combines RNA biochemistry, molecular biology, mitochondrial gene expression, RNA-ligand interactions, and RNA-based technologies.
Planned work includes identifying and characterizing 7S RNA-binding proteins; developing small-molecule libraries and high-throughput screening platforms; applying structural probing methods such as SHAPE-MaP; expressing and purifying recombinant mitochondrial proteins; preparing mitochondrial extracts; and synthesizing and purifying DNA and RNA molecules for biochemical experiments.
Applicants should hold an MSc or equivalent in biochemistry, biology, or a related life or natural science discipline. Practical experience in biochemistry or molecular biology is required. Experience with nucleic acid biochemistry, mitochondrial RNA biology, or transcription is advantageous. Excellent English is required and German is an advantage. The successful candidate is expected to undertake an independent doctorate project in RNA biochemistry.
The position offers salary and benefits under TV-H E 13 at 65%, a three-year contract, membership in the TRR 440 integrated graduate school, professional development opportunities, and a Landesticket for free public transportation in Hesse. Apply online by 21 November 2026 with an English motivation letter, CV, reference contact details, and bachelor's and master's certificates.
