About this position
PhD Scholarship in CFD, Machine Learning, and Shape Optimization for Flow Chemistry Applications at Imperial College London, Department of Chemical Engineering.
This funded PhD project focuses on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, and shape optimization for flow chemistry applications. The research investigates impinging-jet mixers, a key technology in pharmaceutical manufacturing where mixing quality affects product consistency, crystallization, nanoparticle synthesis, and formulation. Students will develop simulation models to study hydrodynamics, turbulence, mass transfer, mixing efficiency, energy dissipation, and micromixing timescales, then use model predictions to improve mixer design and operating conditions.
The project is supervised by Prof Omar Matar in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The department highlights advanced experimental and computational facilities and a strong research environment in chemical engineering and related engineering/science disciplines.
Funding: full tuition fees plus a tax-free maintenance contribution of £25,000 per year for 42 months. The scholarship is open to applicants regardless of fee status.
Location: London, United Kingdom.
Application: applications are accepted all year round, with selection rounds listed for 1 November 2027, 11 January 2027, and 1 March 2027 (subject to scholarship availability). Applicants should submit a PhD application through Imperial’s online admissions system and are encouraged to contact Prof Omar Matar before applying.
