About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences on development of novel flow biocatalytic reactors for a sustainable future.
The project is supervised by Professor Annette Taylor and focuses on sustainable chemical production using flow chemistry, biocatalysis, microreactor technology, and continuous processing. The research aims to transform batch processes into continuous flow systems with immobilised enzyme catalysts, using in-situ spectroscopic monitoring to optimise routes to valuable intermediates from biomass waste, especially fruit-industry residues. There is also scope for python-based programming and feedback-based manipulation of microscale chemical processes.
This is a competition funded PhD project open to students worldwide. Funding may include Horizon Europe fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, or school studentships; some awards cover tuition differences and/or provide a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, computer science, natural sciences, mathematics, or a related discipline. Prior programming experience in science or engineering is required, and an English language qualification is needed if applicable.
How to apply: submit an online application for Research entry in 2027/28 under the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, select full-time or part-time, search for PhD Chemical Engineering (6939), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include a CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.
Deadline shown on the page: 30 November 2026. For questions, contact [email protected]; for an initial conversation, contact [email protected].
