PhD Stipend in Clinical Science, Laboratory and Translational Medicine: Autoimmune Reactions in Disease and Cancer Aalborg University in Denmark

Aalborg University’s Faculty of Medicine, Department of Health Science and Technology, invites applications for one or more fully-funded PhD stipends within the doctoral programme Clinical Science, Laboratory and Translational Medicine. The positions are open for appointment from 15 January 2026 or soon thereafter. The department is a multidisciplinary hub for research, teaching, and dissemination in biomedical engineering, sports science, and medicine, with over 250 staff and 1,700 students. More than 70 PhD students are currently enrolled in the affiliated doctoral school, and research activities are organized across multiple groups and centers, utilizing advanced translational medicine laboratory facilities such as multiOmics, molecular biology, brain analysis, 3D movement analysis, and more.

This PhD opportunity is designed to prepare candidates for careers both within academia and in the commercial or public sectors. The selected candidate will investigate the complex landscape of autoimmune reactions, focusing on their roles in autoimmune diseases and cancers. Key research interests include the immunological role of extracellular vesicles and the systems biology of autoantibodies, with flexibility for the candidate to design their own study. The project will employ a multiOmics toolbox, including proteomics, multiplex and protein array analysis, and bioinformatics approaches such as large language models.

The PhD scholarship includes a mandatory 9-month research stay at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China, and offers international collaboration opportunities with leading laboratories in China and South Africa. Applicants should have a background in human medicine, translational biomedicine, or medical biotechnology, and a strong interest in understanding autoimmune mechanisms, comparing immunological pathways in disease and cancer, and exploring therapeutic interventions.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals holding a Master's degree and are typically for a period of three years. Enrollment as a PhD student at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology is required, in accordance with Danish Ministerial regulations.
