The Department of Electronic Systems at Aalborg University, Denmark, is offering one or more PhD stipends focused on protocols and methods for quantum error correction and mitigation within the general study programme of wireless communication. The positions are available from April 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter, with a duration of three years. As a PhD student, your primary responsibility will be research, contributing to the Center for Classical Communication in the Quantum Era (CLASSIQUE) and the Connectivity Section through scientific publications and participation in international conferences. You will collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds and participate in teaching and supervision activities for undergraduate and master’s students. The CLASSIQUE center is a pioneering initiative at Aalborg University, aiming to revolutionize communication systems for the quantum age by addressing challenges at the intersection of classical and quantum information systems. The center is organized into four research thrusts, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise in communication theory, networking, information theory, physics, mathematics, computer science, and statistics.
The Connectivity Section, led by Professor Petar Popovski, focuses on communication theory, wireless communications, and networking, with research activities spanning quantum communications, low-latency and time-constrained communication, satellite and non-terrestrial networking, AI/ML in communications, communication and sensing, and experimental work on open-radio access networks. The group offers a dynamic and international working atmosphere in Aalborg, a city known for its high quality of life.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in communications engineering, mathematical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Essential skills include strong mathematical and analytical abilities, signal processing, optimization, knowledge of classical and/or quantum data communication (including error correction and mitigation), networking protocols, distributed algorithms, and programming experience (C++, Python, or Matlab). Experience with quantum simulators such as NetSquid is advantageous, and familiarity with quantum information and quantum computing concepts is required. Successful candidates should be curious, collaborative, and ready to engage with interdisciplinary teams within the research group and the CLASSIQUE center.
The PhD stipend includes full employment benefits and a competitive salary in accordance with the AC collective agreement.
