About this position
This PhD project at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS) at Utrecht University focuses on how interventions and broader societal transitions affect air quality in the Netherlands. The research sits within the NWA-ORC project ExpACT, which examines the health effects of air pollution and develops improved monitoring technologies and methods for understanding changing pollution levels and sources.
You will investigate how real-world interventions change air pollution in a series of practice-based Living Labs. These interventions may include local measures such as a noise barrier near a railway line or the temporary closure of an airport. The project also asks how well current measurement and modelling approaches can detect and quantify these effects.
The research is closely connected to co-creation with residents and professionals, with research questions and methods being continuously refined in dialogue with stakeholders. You will work with Living Labs across the country and with ExpACT partners developing new sensors and equipment, integrating these technologies and modelling techniques into the research design.
The project spans a range of settings, from rural areas where agricultural change influences ammonia emissions, to urban locations where emissions from railways and other sources are studied, and Eindhoven where the effects of the planned temporary closure of Eindhoven Airport on ultrafine particle concentrations will be assessed.
You will be based in a multidisciplinary environment at IRAS, part of Utrecht University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Population Health Sciences. The group has international expertise in environmental epidemiology, exposure assessment, occupational health, toxicology, and the exposome, and collaborates with researchers, institutes, companies, governments, and residents throughout the Netherlands.
