About this position
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), through the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), is offering a PhD Student position in the Department of Analytics on the topic Sources of Li, Sn and W in European Variscan Terranes. The project sits at the intersection of economic geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and ore deposit research, with a strong emphasis on understanding the protoliths and geological processes that contribute to granitic magmatism and ore formation in the Variscan Orogen.
The doctoral researcher will work on geochemical and lithological characterization of potential protoliths, mineral characterization using advanced analytical techniques such as EPMA and LA-ICP-MS, and the analysis, interpretation, and documentation of mineralogical and geochemical data. The role also includes critical evaluation of how protolith contributions influence ore-forming processes, as well as the development, testing, and validation of vectoring tools at selected field sites. Results are expected to be published and presented in journals, meetings, workshops, and conferences.
This PhD is well suited to candidates with a Master’s or Diplom degree in Economic Geology, Mineralogy, Geochemistry, or a closely related discipline. Required experience includes knowledge of magmatic systems and associated ore deposits, documented field-based geological research, and experience with bulk and local analytical methods such as XRF, EPMA, and LA-ICP-MS. Experience with modelling software for magmatic or magmatic-hydrothermal processes is considered an asset. Strong English skills are required, and German, French, or Czech language skills are welcome advantages.
HZDR describes an open, diverse, and international work environment with extensive networking opportunities and a structured PhD program that includes continuing education and professional development. The appointment comes with salary and social benefits according to the German public-sector collective agreement (TVöD-Bund), including paid annual leave and a company pension scheme. Depending on qualifications, the position may be classified in salary group 13.
The application deadline is 2026-11-13. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and other supporting documents through the online application system.
