About this position
This PhD project focuses on agentic and embodied AI for adaptive manufacturing systems, with battery assembly and disassembly used as the main application scenarios. The student will work on AI- and robot-enabled methods that allow intelligent production systems to perceive changing conditions, reason about process requirements and constraints, and adapt actions in real time.
The research combines task-level decision intelligence, multimodal perception, digital twin-based learning, and robot control to support more flexible and intelligent manufacturing. A central part of the work is the development and experimental validation of robotic methods for these dynamic industrial scenarios, while also producing insights that extend to adaptive manufacturing systems more broadly.
The position is based at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in the third-cycle subject of Production Engineering. It is part of a joint PhD programme between KTH and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the doctoral student will be employed full time at KTH while spending at least 12 months at SJTU across several research stays.
The proposed supervisors are Xi Vincent Wang and Magnus Wiktorsson. The advertised environment combines doctoral study, industrially relevant research, and international collaboration across two leading universities.
