About this position
The University of Münster is offering a fixed-term, part-time (65%) PhD student position in the Cellular Electrophysiology and Molecular Biology group, led by Prof. Dr. Guiscard Seebohm. This research group is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, combining biochemistry, pharmacology, and medicine to investigate the physiological and chemical biology of proteins, particularly ion channels and proteases. The group utilizes innovative methods such as electrophysiology, 3D protein modeling, high-resolution microscopy, and structural elucidation to address complex questions in cellular and molecular biology.
The successful candidate will be responsible for characterizing modulators and performing functional analyses of Kv7 channels and/or proteases. The role involves transfection of heteromeric channel constructs, application of various electrophysiology techniques in oocytes and cells, work with stem cell-derived 2D cell cultures, and advanced microscopy. The project also includes 3D modeling of electrically active cells and tissue-like conformations, providing a rich environment for multidisciplinary research and skill development.
Applicants must hold a state examination degree in pharmacy or a Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or biology. The position requires a strong interest in collaborative, multidisciplinary research, high motivation, excellent English language skills, and strong communication and teamwork abilities. While German language skills are not mandatory, a willingness to learn is appreciated. Legal requirements mandate complete vaccination against measles for employment.
The PhD program offers a structured three-year training plan, including lab rotations, symposia, and potential association with a local graduate school. The competitive environment fosters individual development and mutual collaboration. Compensation includes a salary according to the TV-L tariff agreement (65% position), extra annual payment, company pension plan (VBL), 30 days of vacation plus two additional days off, and a variety of additional benefits such as sports programs, job ticket, company events, cafeteria, and emergency childcare. The University of Münster provides a respectful, diverse, and supportive work environment, with advisory services for health and work-life balance.
Applications from women and handicapped candidates are especially encouraged and will be given preference in case of equal qualifications. To apply, submit your CV, certificates, field of expertise, and a brief motivation letter (0.5 pages) via the University of Münster career portal by January 7, 2026. A reference letter is welcome. For further inquiries, contact Prof. Dr. Guiscard Seebohm at [email protected].
