Stockholm University’s Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV) is offering a PhD position in Adaptive Immersive Experiences. The project sits in a strong international research environment at DSV’s campus in Kista, north of central Stockholm, and is linked to the ExtralityLab, a dedicated space for immersive technologies, tangible interaction, and data science.

The research explores how immersive devices such as smart glasses and mixed reality headsets can sense user context and adapt experiences in real time. The project combines augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality with real-time machine learning on interaction data to build hands-free interaction methods for digitally enhanced physical spaces. The work includes design, implementation, and evaluation of prototypes and artifacts, with an emphasis on responsible and transparent context-aware systems.

Expected research outcomes include design principles for context-aware hands-free interaction in XR, empirical evidence on adaptive behavior driven by real-time machine learning, and frameworks for building such systems responsibly. The position involves both research and teaching activities, and the successful candidate will work closely with two senior researchers and one postdoctoral fellow.
