About this position
PhD Student Position in Environmental Hydrology and Hydroecology
The Chattopadhyay Hydroecology Lab at Texas State University is recruiting a PhD student in environmental hydrology to begin in August 2027. The research will combine ecohydrologic modelling and fieldwork in the Texas Hill Country to investigate how floods, droughts, stream drying, climate change, land use, and water demand are reshaping Texas rivers and aquatic ecosystems.
Potential research directions include identifying when and why Hill Country streams stop flowing and how drying affects river connectivity and aquatic life; using SWAT+ and data-driven models to forecast floods, low flows, and environmental flows in a hotter, more water-limited Texas; and linking hydrology with environmental DNA and field biodiversity data to determine the flow conditions that sustain diverse and functioning river ecosystems. The student will develop the final direction with Dr. Somsubhra Chattopadhyay and lead a chapter based on large-scale existing data or research synthesis.
Applicants should have a master's degree and a background in hydrology, water resources engineering, environmental science, earth sciences, ecology, or a related field. Experience with hydrologic modelling, GIS, R, Python, or statistics is desirable, along with strong quantitative skills and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research. International applicants are welcome.
Funding is available for 4.5 years. The position is up to 20 hours per week and provides a salary of up to $37,000 per year. Responsibilities include mentoring undergraduate researchers, contributing to Biology Department activities, collaborating within the research group, and serving as a teaching assistant for four semesters.
Apply by November 30, 2026, using the online form. Submit a CV, short responses about your interests and experience, and contact details for two references. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in December, after which the selected candidate must apply to the Texas State Graduate College by February 1, 2027.
