About this position
Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany is seeking a PhD student in fungal natural products within its Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology. The position is part-time at 65% (26 hours per week), fixed for three years, with the goal of doctoral qualification.
The externally funded project investigates fungal enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of psilocybin and related indole alkaloids, particularly in basidiomycetes. The doctoral researcher will biochemically characterize enzymes and produce enzyme variants, working at the interface of mycology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, natural product chemistry, and chemical analysis. The role also involves supervising project-related bachelor's, diploma, or master's theses and publishing results in scientific articles.
Applicants should preferably hold a state examination certificate in pharmacy, or a master's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, or a related biological discipline. Applicants nearing completion of a relevant degree may also apply. Experience in protein biochemistry and natural product chemistry is advantageous, while knowledge of structural biology or mycology is desirable. Strong motivation, initiative, an interest in basic research, and good written and spoken German and English are required.
The appointment is paid under the TV-L public-service agreement in pay group E13 according to personal qualifications, with an annual special payment, 30 days of paid leave, and additional days off on December 24 and 31. Applications must be submitted online by November 24, 2026. Questions may be directed to Professor Dirk Hoffmeister at [email protected].
