About this position
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is offering a full-time PhD position in the Alpine Remote Sensing group within the Climate Change, Extreme Events and Natural Hazards in the Alpine Region (CERC) research center. The position is based primarily at the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF in Davos, Switzerland, with periods at SUPSI in Mendrisio and fieldwork in Canton Ticino.
The PhD research will develop, test, and implement methodologies for investigating large deep-seated landslides in the Southern Swiss Alps. The project combines field investigation, monitoring, satellite remote sensing, radar interferometry, large-dataset analysis, and numerical modelling to understand the spatial and temporal evolution of two landslide sites. Results will support hazard scenarios and help cantonal authorities identify countermeasures to protect infrastructure and populations.
The main PhD supervisor is PD Dr. Andrea Manconi of ETH Zurich. Applicants should have a master’s degree in engineering or natural sciences, experience with mass-movement investigation, remote sensing, fieldwork, satellite radar interferometry, programming, and large datasets, as well as excellent English and independent-working skills. Italian is advantageous for collaboration with SUPSI and authorities in Ticino. The position is expected to start in January 2027. Applications must be submitted through the online portal.
