About this position
Uppsala University is inviting applications for a full-time PhD student position in Limnology, based in the Department of Ecology and Genetics within the Limnology program in Uppsala, Sweden. The project focuses on modelling phytoplankton succession in lakes and understanding how lake communities respond to climate warming, eutrophication, extreme weather events, and other environmental changes.
The doctoral researcher will use process-based biogeochemical and dynamical models, data handling, statistics, and numerical analysis to investigate how physical, chemical, and predation-related processes shape phytoplankton communities. The results will support improved forecasting of lake ecosystem functioning and drinking-water provisioning. Duties also include teaching, coursework, and collaboration within research teams.
Applicants should have a relevant Master's degree or equivalent doctoral-study qualifications in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental sciences, geoscience, biology, environmental engineering, or a related field. Advanced numerical skills, programming experience in R or Python, and excellent spoken and written English are required. Experience with lake or process-based models, lake stratification, aquatic biogeochemical cycles, and phytoplankton ecology is advantageous.
The position is a 100% temporary doctoral employment, starting 1 April 2027 or by agreement, with salary according to Uppsala University's doctoral salary scale. Applications must be submitted by 25 November 2026. The application should include a cover letter, CV, education description, degree and transcript documents, Master's thesis, at least two references, and publications if applicable.
