About this position
Three Quantitative Ecology Postdoctoral Positions are available at the University of Minnesota to join Drs. John Fieberg, Gretchen Hansen, and Jake Walsh on funded projects focused on the ecosystem effects of invasive aquatic plants and their management.
The research is highly interdisciplinary and centers on quantitative ecology, causal inference, decision analysis, and ecological modeling. The projects will assess the benefits, costs, and ecological tradeoffs of aquatic plant treatments and inform management decisions under uncertainty. The researchers will collaborate across three faculty labs and with the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center, with opportunities for mentorship and cross-project interaction.
Research areas include: causal effects of invasive plants and their management using observational lake and management data; aquatic plant responses and adaptive management using statewide survey and treatment data; and decision analysis for native species conservation, including comparison of management alternatives, tradeoff evaluation, and uncertainty analysis.
Required qualifications: a PhD by the start date in ecology, fisheries, aquatic science, statistics, applied mathematics, decision science, natural resource management, or a related field; demonstrated quantitative and statistical/decision-modeling experience; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and strong communication and organization skills.
Preferred experience: causal inference, structured decision making, decision modeling, sensitivity analysis, value of information, state-space models, hierarchical Bayesian models, aquatic ecology, aquatic plant biology, aquatic invasive species management, survey design, occupancy modeling, community analysis, partner engagement, facilitation, teaching, training, or mentorship.
Funding: these are funded postdoctoral positions with a salary of $72,000 to $75,000 per year. The appointment is scheduled from January 1, 2027 to December 31, 2028, at 40 hours per week.
How to apply: apply online through the University of Minnesota job board using Job ID 376741. For questions, contact Dr. John Fieberg, Dr. Gretchen Hansen, or Dr. Jake Walsh by email.
