About this position
The University of Gothenburg invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Natural Sciences, specializing in Physical Geography, with a focus on hyperspectral remote sensing of tundra vegetation. The position is based at the Department of Earth Sciences, a vibrant research environment with expertise in physical geography, ecosystem sciences, and geology. The department is well-equipped with advanced laboratories, including a unique Ice Lab, biogeochemical analysis facilities, and drone technology, supporting cutting-edge research on climate and Earth surface processes.
This PhD project addresses the urgent issue of how extreme climatic changes are impacting tundra vegetation in the Arctic, particularly in the Swedish tundra. The research will leverage newly available hyperspectral satellite data to analyze and quantify the biochemical and biophysical properties of tundra vegetation affected by climate change. Key research questions include the detection of plant diversity and climate-induced changes using hyperspectral data, and the potential benefits of integrating hyperspectral and multispectral satellite observations.
The successful candidate will develop and apply a range of methodologies, including remote sensing data collection and analysis (terrestrial, UAV, and satellite), lab-based chemical analysis of plant material, field inventories, geospatial data analysis with machine learning, and multivariate statistics. Scripting and programming skills (Python or R) will be valuable for data processing and analysis. The project will involve significant fieldwork in the Swedish tundra during the vegetation period, as well as laboratory and computer-based research.
Applicants should have a strong background in remote sensing theory and practical data analysis, with a relevant Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physical geography, environmental science, geology, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include experience with remote sensing, quantitative methods, and proficiency in English. Additional experience with hyperspectral/multispectral data, GIS, climate data analysis, plant ecology, drone operation, and programming is advantageous. Candidates nearing completion of their Master’s degree are also encouraged to apply.
The position is fully funded for four years, primarily by the Swedish National Space Agency, and includes employment as a doctoral student with a salary set according to local agreements. Departmental duties, such as teaching or administration, may comprise up to 20% of the position. The University of Gothenburg offers a supportive, family-friendly, and diverse working environment, with generous family leave and childcare policies.
To apply, submit your application via the University of Gothenburg’s recruitment portal by 19 January 2026. Your application should include a cover letter, CV, transcripts, Master’s thesis (or equivalent), and any relevant certificates. Top candidates will be invited for an interview, which may be conducted in English and via Zoom. For further information, visit the department’s website or contact the main supervisor, Dr. Heather Reese, or the department head, Professor Hans Linderholm.

What's required
Applicants must have completed a second-cycle (Master's) degree in a relevant subject area in the natural sciences, or have completed at least 60 higher education credits at second-cycle level in relevant subjects, or have equivalent qualifications. Relevant subjects include physical geography or closely related fields (e.g., geography, environmental science, geology) with substantial physical geography content. Candidates near completion of their Master's may apply. Essential: university course(s) or experience in remote sensing theory and data analysis, good knowledge of quantitative methods (statistics or data analysis), strong English communication skills, and willingness to conduct field work in tundra environments. Advantageous: experience with multispectral/hyperspectral satellite data, GIS, climate data analysis, plant ecology, plant physiology, drone operation, scripting/programming (Python, R), and prior work with tundra vegetation.
