About this position

The University of Warsaw’s MAB QLAB Centre is recruiting one PhD student for Group 2: Quantum Infrastructure and Photonic Information Processing. The position is based in Warsaw, Poland, within the Center for Hybrid Quantum-Classical Information Technologies (QLAB), and focuses on research in quantum technology, quantum mechanics, and optics. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Michał Karpiński in a team environment that includes seminars, project meetings, open-science dissemination, and collaboration with QLAB partners such as ETH Zurich and Sorbonne.

This is a full-time, temporary, project-funded appointment for up to 36 months, with no teaching obligations under the employment contract. The position is described as a technical role outside the academic-teacher group, with the possibility of moving to a research position after one year. A doctoral-school placement is mandatory: the candidate must concurrently enroll in the University of Warsaw Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences. The announcement also allows beyond-the-limit recruitment for candidates selected by QLAB but not admitted through the standard doctoral-school intake.

Funding is provided through the FENG 2021–2027 programme (International Research Agendas / MAB, project FENG.02.01-IP.05-B013/25). The job includes a gross monthly salary of PLN 9,500 when the statutory doctoral-school scholarship is awarded, or PLN 9,700 gross for candidates admitted without that scholarship through the non-quota pathway. A start-up package is also available, including travel, conference, and computational resources support.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in physics, mathematics, electronic engineering, or a related field. A strong academic record is expected, along with a thesis topic relevant to QLAB Group 2. The ideal background includes experimental or theoretical quantum optics, experimental optics, quantum information (theory or experiment), optical telecommunications, or photonic integrated circuits. Programming ability in Python, MATLAB, Mathematica, or similar tools is required, and English proficiency at B2 level or higher is mandatory.

Applications must be sent by email to [email protected] with the subject line “QLAB PhD G2/02 - <surname>”. Required documents include the signed data-processing clause, candidate declaration, CV, motivation letter, MSc diploma or final-year certificate with transcript, MSc thesis abstract, two reference letters sent directly by academic teachers, and a declaration confirming that the candidate has not previously obtained a doctoral degree. Candidates who do not already hold PhD student status must also include a statement acknowledging the need to enroll in the Warsaw doctoral school and, if relevant, apply via the beyond-the-limit route. The deadline is 18 November 2026 at 23:59 Warsaw time.
