About this position
Uppsala University is recruiting one full-time PhD student in the recycling of solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries. The position is based at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, within the Ångström Advanced Battery Centre.
The doctoral project will establish a scientific basis for recycling lithium halide solid electrolytes used in all-solid-state batteries. It investigates how recycling processes and impurities affect crystal structure, ionic transport, and electrochemical performance, supporting precursor-quality specifications for closed-loop recycling of solid-state battery materials.
The PhD student will conduct air- and moisture-sensitive inorganic synthesis, structural and chemical characterization using methods such as powder X-ray diffraction, SEM-EDS, and XPS, temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy, solid-state battery-cell assembly and testing, data analysis, and scientific dissemination. The project includes collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology on crystallization and purified precursor synthesis and a research stay at Université de Lorraine in France focused on leaching and purification.
Applicants need a relevant second-cycle degree or equivalent higher-education qualifications, excellent English, laboratory experience, data-analysis and scientific-writing skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience in battery testing, inorganic synthesis, powder diffraction, ionic transport, or moisture-sensitive materials is desirable. Hydrometallurgy and crystallization experience is advantageous but not required.
The appointment is temporary, full-time, and located in Uppsala. The application deadline is 9 November 2026. Applications must be submitted through Uppsala University's recruitment system.

What's required
Applicants must hold a second-cycle degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or an equivalent relevant field; alternatively, they must have completed at least 240 higher-education credits, including at least 60 credits at Master's level and an independent project of at least 15 credits, or possess essentially equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad. Applicants must have very good spoken and written English, good organizational and time-management skills, collaborative ability, independence, strong interest in materials chemistry, solid-state chemistry, energy storage or related areas, experimental laboratory experience in chemistry, materials science or a related field, data-analysis experience, and scientific-writing experience. Experience with battery assembly and electrochemical testing, inorganic synthesis, powder diffraction, solid-state ionic transport, or air- and moisture-sensitive materials is desirable. Experience in hydrometallurgy, leaching, solvent extraction, or crystallization is advantageous but not required.
