About this position
The Department of Sociology at KU Leuven, located in Belgium, is offering a fully funded PhD position within the ReSPOND research group. This opportunity is designed for an early-stage researcher interested in exploring the intersection of population dynamics and climate change, with a strong emphasis on societal, demographic, and environmental issues. The ReSPOND group investigates how demographic changes interact with cultural, economic, and political developments, and aims to further research on their connection with climate change.
The successful candidate will develop and carry out original research at the intersection of society, demography, and climate change, with the goal of completing a doctoral thesis. In addition to research, the candidate will contribute to the collective responsibilities of the research group, including educational services, team meetings, research proposals, supervision of bachelor and master students, invigilating exams, and student recruitment activities. The position also offers opportunities to participate in international workshops and seminars, and to pursue further professional development.
Applicants should have recently graduated with at least distinction as a Master in Sociology or a related social science discipline, or be graduating no later than September 2026. Proficiency in Dutch and English, strong statistical analysis skills, and experience working with large datasets are required. Candidates should have a solid basic knowledge of demography, a strong interest in societal issues, and motivation to further develop expertise in this area. Good social skills, teaching abilities, and a willingness to contribute to a stimulating intellectual climate within the Department are essential.
The position is full-time, initially for one year, and is extendable upon positive evaluation. KU Leuven provides a dynamic and stimulating research environment with excellent facilities and is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The university does not tolerate discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ethnic or national background, skin colour, religious or philosophical diversity, neurodivergence, employment disability, health, or socioeconomic status.
Applications must be submitted online by 9 July 2026. Required documents include a full CV with detailed study results and a motivation letter. For further information, applicants may contact Prof. dr. Jan Van Bavel at [email protected]. KU Leuven is happy to assist with questions about accessibility or support offered.
This PhD position is ideal for candidates passionate about population studies, climate change, and social research, and who are eager to contribute to both academic research and teaching within a leading European university.
